Training on disaster risk reduction held in Tuura-Suu village, Kyrgyz Republic

The training focused on emergency preparedness and disaster risk reduction for local communities.

On 30 June, a training for local residents and staff of the Mambetov ayil okmotu was held in Tuura-Suu village, Ton District, Issyk-Kul Region, Kyrgyz Republic. The event was organized as part of the complementary adaptation measures of the UNESCO-Adaptation Fund GLOFCA project. The training builds on earlier project activities in Tuura-Suu, including the official handover ceremony for the newly constructed mudflow protection dam.

The training focused on emergency preparedness and disaster risk reduction for local communities. Participants learned about key approaches to integrated disaster risk management, as well as international and national frameworks in this area.

Special attention was given to the integration of disaster risk reduction measures into socio-economic development plans, improved coordination between district and local levels, and the active involvement of women and youth in emergency preparedness and response.

The practical part of the training included group work. The format encouraged participants to actively engage in the discussion, share their experience, identify current risks for their villages and jointly develop proposals that may be reflected in the local development programme. Issues related to fire safety and priority actions during natural hazards were also discussed.

The UNESCO-Adaptation Fund GLOFCA project continues to support local communities in Kyrgyzstan and other countries of Central Asia in strengthening their resilience to risks associated with climate change and glacial lake outburst floods.
