Educational field visit to Uzbekistan’s mountains for local school children

In September 2025, the GLOFCA project organized a field visit for school students from the villages of Pskem and Tepar in Uzbekistan in collaboration with SE “Institute of HYDROENGEO”.

The Pskem valley is prone to natural hazards such as landslides and rockfalls, which threaten local communities and infrastructure. Involving young people in understanding these risks is essential for strengthening long-term resilience.

During the four-day field programme, students joined experts from the Institute of Hydroengeo to observe landslide zones, visit the Urungach Lakes, and learn how natural processes shape the landscape and affect local communities. A final training seminar at the school in Pskem helped reinforce practical skills.

By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience in the mountains, the initiative gave students scientific knowledge and practical awareness of how to protect themselves and their families. This community-based approach also fosters a culture of safety, ensuring that the next generation is better prepared to cope with environmental risks.

The activity was part of a broader effort under the GLOFCA project to strengthen disaster risk reduction in Central Asia through community engagement and the development of early warning systems.
