This paper briefly describes methods used by the Institute of Geography and Water Security to assess the hazards and risks from Glacier Lake Outburst Floods and Mudflows.

This brochure explores the growing risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), driven by retreating glaciers and increasing downstream vulnerabilities. It identifies key challenges, such as limited spatial coverage of hazard reduction measures, insufficient local engagement, and the need for stronger governance and integrated multi-hazard approaches. Drawing on global case studies, it offers recommendations to address these issues, emphasizing sustainable, community-centered solutions.
This study focuses on the Baralmas Glacier system in Tajikistan, highlighting repeated GLOF events, including five major mudflows in 2023. The report includes a detailed analysis of the glacier’s lake outburst potential and its impact on regional infrastructure.
