Abstract:

The paper describes the method of using of remote sensing data to determine the important characteristics of the potentially dangerous mountain lakes of glacial origin: area, volume and maximal discharge of the outburst wave. Empirical formulae for computation of lake’s volume as a function of its area and maximal depth have been obtained on the basis of initial data for 141 lakes distributed onto four groups. Maximal discharges of outburst wave, according to the Costa formula, have been determined for a set of lakes located in the Gunt River basin. These lakes could be the source of mudflows or flash floods potentially dangerous for Horog city and other settlements.
