The Institute conducts several lines of research that are directly relevant to the project. The Institute also houses a Department of Glaciology, which conducts year-round monitoring and research at three remote stations in the Northern Tien Shan mountain range. Research focuses on snow-ice and water resources in a changing climate. The Institute has been consulted and has contributed to the formulation of the project.
The Institute of Geography will be involved in conducting a scientific assessment of the hazards and risks of the GLOFs.
