Abstract:

This research paper explores the link between the degradation of the environment, migration, internal displacement, and the vulnerability of the rural population in the Republic of Tajikistan. The report provides qualitative data with regard to the environmental situation in Tajikistan and quantitative data on the perception of the environment by the country’s population as well as an assessment of the causes of migration, quantitative and qualitative data on the types of migration, and its association with environmental changes. The data provided is based on a public opinion poll representing the country’s population and quantitative and qualitative surveys in 4 districts with different types of environmental degradation and migration patterns, particularly as it pertains to the 2005 flooding.
