Abstract:

Climate warming since the Little Ice Age led to the formation of reservoirs on moraine-glacial complexes in the Zailiysky Alatau. Breakouts of these reservoirs caused catastrophic debris flows in the mid-20th century. Initially, rainfall-induced debris flows were the main concern, with large check dams forming the core of defense strategies. However, increased glacially-induced debris flows necessitated new approaches, including small reservoirs in high-altitude zones and preventive measures to empty hazardous moraine lakes.
